Play It Safe With Cargo Insurance
DJS recommends that all shippers, both import and export, obtain Cargo Insurance coverage for their shipments. History shows that just about every shipping peril that can happen – will. Still, we continue to be amazed at the many different ways that shipments can become damaged, lost, stolen, pilfered, sunk, dropped, burned, and even thrown overboard.
Shippers need to be aware of the limitations of carrier insurance (ocean, air, truck, and rail) regarding liability for loss or damaged goods. A carrier’s liability often covers only a portion of the loss, or none at all, depending on factors such as the location and type of damage. This can leave shippers significantly exposed.
It’s also important to understand that even if a shipment arrives intact, the shipper may be subject to “general average”. Simply put, when a vessel incurs substantial damage, the carrier may declare general average, which makes any party with freight on board that vessel liable to cover a portion of the loss. If for no other reason, this liability makes cargo insurance essential for all shippers.
While we are not an insurance company, DJS can secure coverage on your behalf at a fair and competitive per shipment rate. Our staff will answer all your questions and help determine the right coverage for you. And should you need to file a claim, we can do that for you, too.
